Nigerian poultry production is a ₦1.6 trillion industry that loses an estimated 20–30% of its value annually to preventable disease outbreaks. The root cause is not a lack of vaccines or drugs — it is a lack of consistent biosecurity discipline at the farm level.
Biosecurity simply means keeping disease agents away from your flock. It costs very little relative to the losses it prevents, and every commercial poultry operation, however small, can implement it. Here are the five non-negotiable practices our veterinary team recommends.
First, adopt strict all-in/all-out stocking. Never introduce new birds into a house where an older flock is still present. Second, enforce a 48-hour empty period between flocks, using a broad-spectrum disinfectant on all surfaces, drinkers, and feeders. Third, install physical barriers — roof netting, mesh side-walls, and a footbath at every entry point — to exclude wild birds and rodents. Fourth, restrict farm visitors and require all staff to change into farm-specific clothing and footwear before entering the poultry house. Fifth, record daily mortality figures and investigate immediately when the daily death rate exceeds 0.5% of flock size.
These five measures, consistently applied, will reduce disease-related mortality to under 4% — the industry benchmark for well-managed commercial operations. Our Farm Health Advisory team is available to conduct on-farm biosecurity audits and help you build a customised flock-health calendar.
